Xiaomi’s upcoming new flagship phone, the 17 Pro, has become a hot topic in the mobile technology world. Initial details about the phone reveal that Qualcomm’s next-generation chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, significantly raises the bar for performance.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in testing
The phone’s Geekbench test results reveal that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 not only surpasses its predecessor but also competes head-to-head with Apple’s latest chip, the A19 Pro. Qualcomm, which has long overshadowed Apple in single-core performance, has closed the gap with this new generation.
According to Geekbench 6.5 results, the new processor powering the Xiaomi 17 Pro achieves single-core performance of 3,831 and multi-core performance of 11,525. These results are quite remarkable compared to the previous model, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which averaged 3,200 single-core and 10,000 multi-core performance. The new chipset delivers a significant 19% single-core and 15% multi-core performance increase.
For comparison, the A19 Pro chip in Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro achieves 3,850 single-core and 11,000 multi-core performance. These figures clearly demonstrate that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is on par with Apple in terms of raw CPU power.
In addition to performance, power efficiency is also critical. The A19 Pro is known to perform well in this area. It’s also a fact that Apple’s hardware and software integration allows applications to extract additional power from the A19 Pro.
However, Qualcomm has reportedly made significant efforts to minimize heat and performance degradation in the new chipset. This could bring advantages such as more stable frame rates, especially in games, and better battery life compared to its predecessor.
